How a transfer works

FFL transfers, step by step

  1. Have it shipped to us

Give the seller our FFL info — email transfers@mak0firearms.com and we'll send our license directly to them. Most sellers have us on file already.

  2. We log it in

When your firearm arrives we enter it in our bound book and email you, usually the same day it lands.

  3. Come in with ID

Bring a valid government-issued photo ID showing your current address. You'll complete ATF Form 4473 at the counter — about ten minutes.

  4. Background check

We submit the check through the Colorado Bureau of Investigation (InstaCheck). Many come back the same visit; some take longer. Colorado also has a waiting period before pickup — we'll give you the exact pickup date in writing.

  5. Pick it up

Once approved and the waiting period has run, your firearm goes home with you. We'll walk through its function and safe storage if you'd like.

About

On East 3rd Street since 2023

MAk0Firearms opened in 2023 with one display case, a workbench, and a simple idea: a gun shop should feel like a good hardware store — knowledgeable, unhurried, and honest about what you do and don't need.

Today we're a team of six, but the idea hasn't changed. We'll spend forty minutes helping you decide on a first handgun and tell you plainly if the cheaper option is the better one. About a third of our customers have never owned a firearm before, and we're proud of that.

Safety and legality aren't fine print here — they're the first conversation. Every sale includes a free cable lock, and every first-time buyer gets an open invitation to our no-cost orientation class.

Compliance & FAQ

Know before you go

Plain-language answers to the questions we hear every day. Laws change — when in doubt, call us or check with the Colorado Bureau of Investigation. Nothing here is legal advice.

How old do I have to be to buy?
Under federal law, you must be 18 for rifles, shotguns, and long-gun ammunition and 21 for handguns and handgun ammunition when buying from a licensed dealer. Colorado law also sets 21 as the minimum age for most firearm purchases — we'll confirm the current rule that applies to your purchase at the counter.
How does the background check work?
Every firearm purchase or transfer starts with ATF Form 4473, a federal form you fill out at our counter (about 10 minutes). We then submit your information to CBI InstaCheck, Colorado's point of contact for the federal NICS system. Three outcomes are possible:
  • Approved — most checks; often within the same visit.
  • Delayed — CBI needs more time to research. We hold the firearm and call you when it clears.
  • Denied — we'll give you CBI's appeal information. We can't see the reason for a denial.
Is there a waiting period in Colorado?
Yes. Colorado requires a waiting period between the background check and pickup, even if your check is approved instantly. When you buy, we'll write your earliest pickup date on your receipt so there's no guesswork.
What should I bring?
A valid government-issued photo ID with your current physical address (driver's license or state ID). If your ID shows an old address, bring a supporting government document with the current one — vehicle registration, hunting license, or similar. PO boxes don't qualify as an address.
How long does an FFL transfer take once it arrives?
We log incoming firearms the day they arrive and email you. After that it's the same process as an in-store purchase: Form 4473, InstaCheck, then the state waiting period. Plan on picking up a few days after your paperwork, not the same afternoon.
Do you ship firearms to my house?
No — and no legitimate dealer does. Firearms purchased through our site are reserved online and completed in store, or shipped to another licensed FFL near you. Ammunition and accessories can ship directly where state law allows.
Can you ship ammo to other states?
It depends on the destination. Several states and localities restrict or prohibit direct ammunition shipments or require a license on file. Our checkout flags restricted destinations, and we cancel and refund any order we can't lawfully fulfill.
Do magazines have capacity limits in Colorado?
Colorado restricts the sale and transfer of large-capacity magazines (generally over 15 rounds). We stock compliant magazines and will let you know if an accessory you're after is affected.
Can someone else pick up my firearm?
No. The person completing Form 4473 and the background check must be the actual buyer and must take possession in person. Buying a firearm for someone who can't legally buy one themselves (a "straw purchase") is a federal felony — we will refuse any sale we believe is one.
I've never held a gun. Will I feel out of place?
You'll be in good company — about a third of our customers are first-time buyers. Ask for a "first-timer walkthrough" at the counter and we'll start from zero: safety rules, how actions work, what fits your hand, and what it all costs. No commission pressure, ever.
